In June of 1972, I was hired to head up the security function which we re-named the Department of Public Safety. Prior to my acceptance of this position, I graduated from the Police Administration program at Michigan State University and had served in a similar capacity on two different campuses. At the time of my appointment, I proposed to upgrade the entire campus security system into a professional department which would afford the university community the best protection possible."
Currently, most universities are in a state of turmoil and Western is no exception. We have had many incidents here which if not properly handled could have resulted in chaos. Fortunately Mr. Slamons maintained a good relationship with the students at Western and this has helped."

While at Western Illinois University, Slamons dealt with protests and other student "uprisings". His actions during those protests reflected on his leadership capabilities and left feelings of security for students and faculty. He was noted by many to be an exceptional individual fit for the role of an executive position. Slamons was appointed as Director of Security in 1972 by the University of Arkansas.
